How to reduce your cortisol?

Published by Eve Karat le

Today we're going to talk about why the stress hormone cortisol can cause weight gain and prevent fat loss.

When we are stressed, our body releases cortisol to help us cope with the situation. In the short term, this response is helpful, but if stress becomes chronic, cortisol remains elevated for long periods of time.

High cortisol levels have several effects on our bodies that can contribute to weight gain. First, it increases the appetite, especially for foods high in sugar and fat. Second, cortisol promotes fat storage, especially around the abdominal area. Finally, cortisol can interfere with the production of other hormones, like insulin, which can lead to insulin resistance and metabolic problems.

Additionally, when cortisol is high, our body is in “fight or flight” mode. In this state, the body conserves fat reserves for energy when needed. This means that even if we exercise and eat healthily, our body may have difficulty releasing stored fat.

It is therefore crucial to manage our stress to maintain a balanced cortisol level. Techniques like meditation, yoga, regular exercise, and getting enough sleep can help reduce stress and maintain healthy cortisol levels.
