Why is it harder to lose or maintain weight when it's cold?

In winter, several factors make losing or maintaining weight more difficult. First, the cold stimulates appetite. Our bodies try to produce more heat, which increases our cravings for high-calorie foods, such as fatty comfort foods.

Second, the decrease in light affects our mood and motivation. Less sun exposure can reduce the production of serotonin, the feel-good hormone, leading to sugar cravings to compensate.

Lack of physical activity also plays a role. When it's cold, we tend to stay indoors, reducing our energy expenditure. Less movement, combined with a richer diet, promotes weight gain.

Finally, metabolism can slow down slightly due to inactivity. Even though the body burns calories to keep warm, this does not always compensate for excess calories.

Tip: Move regularly, eat foods rich in fiber and protein, and stay well hydrated to counteract these effects.
