The consumption of red wine dates back thousands of years. Over time, this drink has marked history and still fascinates mankind. The discovery of wine quickly arouses passions through countless varieties, textures, tastes and aromas. There was enough for scientists looking for a logical and precise answer to this situation. Research soon led to the discovery of a class of stilbene polyphenols resveratrol. Resveratrol is mainly found in the skin of grapes and its concentration can vary from one grape variety to another. Cardiovascular diseases Numerous studies have shown that resveratrol has the ability to influence a variety of physiological targets responsible for the development of dozens of chronic and degenerative diseases. For example, resveratrol reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease by preventing the development of atherosclerotic plaques in the walls of arteries and other blood and by promoting better dilation of these vessels. More resveratrol prevents the oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol) and increases the body's ability to produce HDL (good cholesterol).

Cancer:  Resveratrol also has remarkable anti-cancer properties including a triple action: it fights against the formation of free radicals, it protects DNA from damage caused by chemicals and neutralizes carcinogens in the liver. A study published in the journal "Science" showed that polyphenol is active in all three phases of tumor development (initiation-promotion-progression). Resveratrol kills cancer whether or not it is estrogen-dependent cells and blocks the development of bone metastases in some cancers. Other studies have shown that it is possible to improve the results of chemotherapy because resveratrol protects healthy cells from certain adverse effects of chemotherapy. Italian research showed a significant reduction in the growth of breast cancer cells exposed to resveratrol. This effect is caused by a sharp decrease in the expression of estrogen receptors, often involved in the progression of breast cancer receptors. More importantly, these studies demonstrate that resveratrol suppresses the growth of cells resistant to tamoxifen, a drug often used to treat hormone-dependent breast cancer. These results could be used to develop an anticancer agent for patients resistant to hormone therapy.

Resveratrol exerts its spectacular anti-estrogenic activity by preventing the most potent endogenous estrogens from binding to estrogen receptors. It is part of a family of molecules called SERMs (specific, estrogens, receptors, modulators). The agonist and antagonist activity of resveratrol on estrogen receptor alpha is significant, but its affinity for these receptors is much lower than estrogen itself. In other words, resveratrol can bind to receptors effectively enough to prevent the most potent and toxic metabolites from exerting their effects on estrogen. A decrease in estrogen expression leads many women to a significant reduction in water retention and cellulite.

Obesity : Recent research has also shown that resveratrol can help prevent fat accumulation and prevent the development of obesity. Resveratrol targets a protein called sirtuin which mimics the effect of calorie restriction on fat cells. German researchers have also published work showing that resveratrol can have a direct effect on body weight by interfering with fat accumulation in fat cells. Using immature adipocytes as a model, they found that adding resveratrol prevented these cells from maturing, reducing their susceptibility to proliferate and increase in size. The combined effects of resveratrol therefore promote a significant reduction in body fat. Other research on obese mice showed that when large amounts of resveratrol were added to their diet, the overall health of the mice improved significantly. Their insulin levels decreased, thus preventing the onset of diabetes. Liver and heart damage caused by excessive calorie diets also regressed significantly. The life expectancy of obese mice treated with resveratrol compared to mice in the normal weight control group.

Muscle activation: French researchers tested resveratrol in animals placed in conditions of extreme inactivity to observe whether the administration of resveratrol could help in situations to prevent muscle atrophy. The results were amazing! Simple administration of resveratrol to these animals was sufficient to preserve muscle cell mass and metabolic activity. The cells also retained their insulin sensitivity. According to Johan Auwerx of the Institute of Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology in Illkirch, France, "Resveratrol increases muscle endurance by increasing the components of energy production in muscle cells." Auwerx said: High doses of trans-resveratrol are needed to trigger the pathway that results in more mitochondria in cells. “The effects of resveratrol are so pronounced that endurance athletes may one day take resveratrol as an erogenous agent to enhance their performance,” he concludes.

The wrong side!

Since nothing is perfect, the amount of resveratrol needed to promote weight loss is important. It takes over 100 bottles of red wine a day to get the amount of resveratrol needed to have the same effect seen in mice. So for weight loss, supplementation is the only option.
